Working at height without safety precautions 'will always' be a risk

It is always a risk for people to work at height without the required safety precautions, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

The HSE made this statement after an employee fell through a barn roof in Bishop's Stortford and sustained multiple fractures. Incidents such as this also remind people of the importance of informative safety signs in potentially dangerous workplaces.

HSE inspector Kim Wicks said: "This incident could easily have been avoided if these had been followed. Falls from height are among the biggest causes of workplace deaths in the UK and the outcome of this incident could have been even more serious."

The barn's owners Elizabeth and James Reay were fined a collective total of £8,000 by the HSE.

Land Rover was also recently fined by the HSE, after it failed to recognise the risks associated with using hand tools.

Ten cases of ill-health were found to be caused by the appliances at the company's Solihul Plant.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800520446-ADNFCR
