Wigan borough to introduce 20mph speeds

A 20mph speed limit is to be introduced in the Leigh area of Wigan in a bid to improve road safety.

Most streets in built-up areas within Leigh are to have the restriction, which will be rolled out across the Wigan borough by April 2015 after Wigan council, police, fire and rescue and health service leaders signed a pledge to cut the limit.

Councillor David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: Wigan Council is proud to be making this pledge and working with our partners to make sure safety is a top priority.

"We have worked hard to continually bring down the number of fatalities on our roads, but eight lives were lost in 2011 alone due to road traffic incidents – that is eight too many."

Regardless of speed limits, it is vital for motorists to adapt their driving to suit adverse conditions.

For example, drivers should drive carefully in hazardous weather and even cancel journeys when the weather is particularly hazardous.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801537306-ADNFCR
