Waste industry is less safe than other industries

The waste industry is not as safe as other industries in the UK, new figures have suggested.

Fatal injuries in the sector are more than 10 times the national average, while accident rates stand at over four times the national average, according to statistics carried out for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The handling of large and awkward objects led to 33 per cent of all accidents, whereas those conducting manual work represented 75 per cent of incidents, which may prompt firms to evaluate their safety signage.

RCPSA spokesman Paul Godfrey has commented on the results, saying that operator safety is a "key factor" in machine design and operation.

While health and safety measures are vital for firms, Michael Slade from Bibby Consulting and Support has suggested that their legislation is not user-friendly.

Mr Slade noted that, for some companies, there is no incentive to tackle health and safety until they are affected by an accident.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801304276-ADNFCR
