Warning signs installed at Saltford Weir

Warning signs have been installed at Saltford Weir after a teenager died in the area.

The Canal and River Trust has brought in the measures following its own investigation, advising people that they should avoid swimming in rivers and canals unless it is for an organised event.

Tony Stammers, head of health and safety at the trust, said: "We have carried out an investigation into the safety precautions in place at Saltford lock and have made the decision to install 'no swimming' signs and a life ring at the site."

Mr Stammers continued by saying that the strong currents and obstructions under the water make the river challenging for even strong swimmers.

These comments come after safety signs were introduced to prevent people from swimming at West Street Beach in Watchet.

The notices emphasise the hazards associated with climbing on the rocks and swimming in the area, with deep water and strong currents making conditions dangerous.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801434778-ADNFCR
