Workplace deaths are being underestimated by the government by some 800 per cent, according to trade union Unite.
It has accused ministers of bringing in "light touch" health and safety regulations and said that there should be an increase in the number of workplace inspections that are carried out.
The calls could see more safety signage being put in place to warn workers of any dangers surrounding their place of employment.
Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite, said: "The government is hell bent on reducing health and safety regulations, and standards. It will lead to fewer inspections, less enforcement and more deaths, injuries and ill-health at work."
He added that the current government strategy is "built on myth and dogma" and is putting workers at greater risk.
Mr McCluskey went on to say that current statistics on deaths at work are "only the tip of the iceberg" and are a massive underestimate of the true problem.
