Shropshire households to be given fire safety advice

Free fire safety checks will be carried out on properties in Shropshire which are lived in by elderly and vulnerable residents.
The Shropshire Star reported that the scheme will run in Bridgnorth and Market Drayton after two blazes in the county recently claimed the lives of two pensioners.
Advice will be given to households, while fire safety signs could be placed in order to clearly point out the nearest exit. Checks will also be carried out on fire alarms to ensure that they are up to scratch and ready to work if required.
Professor Rod Thomson, director of public health for Shropshire, said that a similar project had already been carried out in Ludlow.
Take up was not as high as hoped as pensioners had to contact their GP to arrange a visit from a fire officer.
In the future, it is hoped that GPs will highlight vulnerable households, with fire officers then writing to these people to arrange a visit.
