Motorists in Manly will see new safety signs around schools to remind them to drive safely.

In an effort to urge motorists to drive slowly, not park illegally or use their mobile phones when driving, Manly Council has put up brightly coloured safety signage around schools in the area.

Penalties for ignoring the safety signs will also be imposed, and using a mobile phone while in a "school zone" could earn motorists a minimum fine of $344 (around £206) and four points, the Manly Daily reports.

Jean Hay, the Mayor of Manly, told the news provider: "The signs will be used to create greater awareness and warn drivers of penalties involved in breaking the law around school zones.

"The busiest times for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic near schools is during school opening and closing times.

"Drivers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all children."

Earlier this month, pupils from a school in Markington won a competition to design safety signs which will be displayed outside their school.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800515141-ADNFCR
