Safety signs part of big-money continental market

Improved safety signs are part of proposals to develop a £600,000 continental market square in Leicester, it has been reported.

According to the Leicester Mercury, plans to develop the open-air square and food court next to the city's Corn Exchange have been submitted to the local council.

Improved changes to signage, recycling and toilets, along with the development of gazebos and a seating area, have all been suggested.

A number of stallholders have raised concerns about the proposed changes, the newspaper said. Some are concerned that creating the new market could have a negative impact on their business.

Over 300 people listed their concerns in a letter to Leicester City Council, requesting a formal meeting. But only 18 traders attended, according to Dawn Alfonso, of the Leicester Market Traders' Federation.

"A number of traders requested a meeting but then not many of them actually showed up. There are one or two upset about this, it has got a bit of support – but not too much," she told the newspaper.

The designers of the market told the newspaper that markets in London and Barcelona inspired the idea. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800154640-ADNFCR
