Plant hire firm hit with six-figure fine after safety breaches

A Warrington-based plant hire company has been fined £200,000 after health and safety failures led to the death of one its employees.
The man died on August 16th 2006 after falling five metres to the ground while attempting to attach lifting chains to a stack of two accommodation units at a site in Maidstone.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that Ashtead Plant Hire had not issued workers at the site with the required safety kit or given them training on the special methods required to use it.
After pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 at Maidstone Crown Court, the company was ordered to pay £15,698.30 in costs, in addition to its fine.
"This was a wholly avoidable incident which led to a tragic and totally unnecessary loss of life," said HSE inspector John Underwood.
"It is completely inexcusable that the company had identified the risks, prepared an adequate procedure to manage the risk, and then failed to implement that procedure to protect their workers."
Last week, Rubb Buildings Limited was fined £100,000 and ordered to pay £48,795.36 in costs after one of its workers died in a fall from a hangar roof at Bristol International Airport.
