No smoking signs to go up as Blackpool kicks the habit at playing fields

Children enjoying parks and playing fields in Blackpool will benefit from cleaner air when no smoking signs are put up.

An initiative from NHS Blackpool, which is being supported by the local authority, will see 13 designated as smokefree sites.

The warning signs will tell visitors: "Altogether Now. To protect children, this is a designated smokefree site."

Ivan Taylor, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Blackpool Council, said that it was not reasonable for children who are playing to be subjected to smoke and influenced by what they see around them.

"We'll have to wait and see what the reaction is but I think most people would welcome the reason for it. Smoking is a killer and we need to do all we can to discourage it," he added.

However, the move has not been welcomed by Crazy Scots bar owner Hamish Howitt, who told the Blackpool Gazette that finding a quiet bench and having a cigarette was "one of the few pleasures for many people".ADNFCR-2754-ID-801430272-ADNFCR
