Companies may be prompted to check their safety signs after Leeds Metropolitan University was honoured for its health and safety measures.

The institution has been handed a gold award in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011.

In order to determine the effectiveness of a group's safety measures, the scheme examines accident records and the health and safety management systems of organisations.

John Hamilton, head of safety of health and wellbeing at Leeds Metropolitan University, said: "Achieving the RoSPA gold standard is testimony to the hard work of everyone involved in putting our health and safety policy into practice.

"It shows we are serious about providing a safe and healthy environment for our staff and students to work and study."

Another company that has been recognised at RoSPA's event is Frank Haslam Milan, which collected an Occupational Health and Safety Sector Award.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800554518-ADNFCR
