A road safety programme by British Gas has saved millions of pounds, leading to praise from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

The news may encourage other companies to adopt safety signage measures, after the company's Driver Risk Management System cut road incidents by 30 per cent.

IOSH head of campaigns Caroline Patel said: "British businesses that don't take good health and safety seriously are missing a trick. Potentially, they are losing out on hundreds of thousands of pounds."

Ms Patel went on to say that British Gas' initiative is an example of improving a company's competitive edge through boosting the skills of its drivers.

A report by the Burton Mail has revealed that both South Derbyshire District Council and Burton and South Derbyshire College have been shortlisted for workplace of the year at the St John Ambulance First Aid Workplace Awards.

They will discover if they are successful at an awards ceremony in London later this month. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800786512-ADNFCR
