New interior signage, including door signs and health and safety signs, will help pupils and staff find their way around a new college development in Devon.

Over 1,600 students will start at the county's £54 million Bideford College today. Two years in development, the building has a futuristic design with a green sustainability focus.

"Special care" has been taken with door signs to ensure people can navigate the site effectively, including the addition of colour co-ordinated wall panels.

The building heralds a new style of educational architecture, utilising natural light and open space to create an installation fit for the 21st century.

Its green emphasis includes a woodchip biomass boiler, the main heat source of the school, a sustainable drainage system (meaning water can be captured and used across the site), and a wind generation system.

Veronica Matthews, principal of the college, said: "This is a very exciting time for the college and for Bideford as a town. The new college will put Bideford at the forefront nationally, not only of education, but of sustainable and innovative building design."

Bideford College has specialist status, joining the Specialist Schools programme in 2003.
