The Highways Agency has announced 99 per cent of England's strategic road network will be free of roadworks over Christmas and New Year.

It will clear more than nine out of ten sets of its plans for the holiday period as it aims to finish off over 250 miles of work on motorways and A-roads by the end of this week, leaving 57 miles suspended between 21 December and 2nd January.

Roads minister Stephen Hammond said: "Over the Christmas and New Year holiday virtually the whole of England’s network of motorways and major A roads will be free of road works.

"This means more lanes will be open and many speed restrictions will be lifted, helping everyone to travel more freely."

The news will be welcomed by motorists across the UK, with a high number of people expected to be on the roads over the period as they aim to reunite with family members.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801511317-ADNFCR
