Hartlepool firms to face health and safety check-up

9th March 2010 | Health and Safety Signs

Businesses on industrial estates in Hartlepool are being assessed on their implementation of health and safety measures such as warning signs, it has been confirmed.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Hartlepool Borough Council have joined forces and will be carrying out checks at various sites in the town over the next two weeks.

Inspectors will be looking at whether companies are taking the necessary steps to manage asbestos risks, while workplace transport and working at height procedures will also be monitored.

"We're also keen to see how local employers are promoting health and safety through active leadership from managers and by involving staff," commented HSE inspector Jonathan Wills.

HSE figures indicate that asbestos-related diseases are the biggest cause of work-related deaths in the UK, with accidents involving transport currently the second most common occurrence.

The HSE recently announced that it will be carrying out a number of unannounced checks at construction sites all over the country in the coming months.
