Gas installers must be registered with the appropriate approved body before they make use of safety signage and carry out work, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

The organisation made the statement after an unregistered gas installation company and its director unlawfully completed work on properties in Lincolnshire.

Lincoln Crown Court heard that workers at UK Oil and Gas limited completed gas fittings and service pipework in 2008 even though they were not registered with the Council for Registered Gas Installers, now the Gas Safe Register.

The HSE prosecuted the company's director, Martin Crute, and charged him with a £2,000 fine as well as £41,000 in costs.

HSE inspector Sarah Jardine said: "As the director of UK Oil and Gas Ltd, Mr Crute misled vulnerable people, abused their trust and undertook work which cost one couple hundreds of pounds to put right and make safe." ADNFCR-2754-ID-800561757-ADNFCR
