Firms urged to use construction site signs

Firms may want to consider using construction site signs to reduce the risk of injury when their employees are working at height.
Recently, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) declared nearly one in four construction sites in Newcastle unsafe after completing a series of spot checks throughout February.
After visiting 37 sites, several were found to be so far below required standards that inspectors issued notices ordering that work be stopped immediately.
Seven of the notices related to unsafe work being carried out at height. During 2009/10, there were more than 70 injuries during construction work in Newcastle.
Rob Hirst, the HSE's principal inspector for construction, said it was disappointing that construction sites were still found to be taking risks with their workers' lives, given this was the fifth year of the inspection initiative.
"Although there were examples of good practice, which the industry can learn from, the fact that we found unsafe conditions on nine in 37 sites is unacceptable," he said.
"Companies have a responsibility to protect their workers, to help rid construction of its reputation as being one of Britain's most dangerous industries."
Recently, a building firm in Stoke-on-Trent was fined more than £3,000 after a steeplejack was seriously injured after falling from a church roof he was repairing.
