Firm fined over worker chemical exposure

A Suffolk company has been fined after a worker was repeatedly exposed to dangerous chemicals, which left him disabled.
The man, who is now 57, was employed at Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company Ltd in Sudbury as the dye house manager from 1993 to 2012, during which time he was hospitalised with breathing difficulties on a number of occasions.
After taking a variety of drugs to keep the symptoms at bay, the man found that his symptoms improved significantly after he left the company and stopped working with chemicals.
A HSE investigation found that the organisation had failed to properly assess the risks arising from working with hazardous reactive dyes, with inadequate training, warning signs and equipment used to safeguard staff members' health.
HSE inspector Martin Kneebone commented: "Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company Ltd should also have provided proper information, instruction, training and health surveillance for their employees. The lack of these left workers at a significant risk of contracting respiratory illnesses by their exposure to these chemicals."
