Construction signs 'should always be used'

16th December 2009 | Warning Signs, Construction Signs

One expert has advised companies that construction signs should always be used when roadworks are being carried out.

Joy Jones, principal inspector for traffic management at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), said they are not only important for preventing accidents, but using warning signs when motorway work is being carried out is the law.

According to the expert, any firm which is working on amendments or alterations to road surfaces should first make a plan beforehand to ensure that traffic will be re-routed.

Ms Jones added that the company should then put down constructions signs and warning signs when the work is being carried out and makes sure they are visible to avoid confusion or possible accidents.

She commented: "We will not hesitate to take action against construction companies who fail to comply with the law."

The specialist's advice comes after the opening of a new bus route from St Ives to Cambridge was delayed after road safety signs were painted backwards.ADNFCR-2754-ID-19515194-ADNFCR
