Construction signs 'essential' over Christmas

18th December 2009 | Warning Signs, Construction Signs

It is essential that building companies take measures to secure their sites over Christmas, such as installing construction signs, a sector watchdog has warned.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued the advice to firms which will be downing tools over the festive period, recommending that precautions are in place, such as keeping all materials locked away and making sure that scaffolding is sturdy.

In addition, the organsiation said that hazards such as excavation pits should be properly highlighted by warning signs.

HSE principal construction inspector Andrew Kingscott commented: "Children often see poorly guarded sites as playgrounds, so contactors should do all they can to help prevent them gaining access in the first place."

The importance of using safety signs was also recently illustrated by Joy Jones, principal inspector for traffic management at the HSE, who pointed out that using the notices is the law on sites such as roadworks.ADNFCR-2754-ID-19520019-ADNFCR
