Increased numbers of warning signs have been installed at a cemetery in Corby to deter vandals from desecrating graves.

Bereaved residents began a petition after becoming concerned at the level of vandalism taking place at Shire Lodge Cemetery in Rockingham Road, the Northants Evening Telegraph reported.

They are calling for CCTV cameras to be installed.

The newspaper said relatives have reported that graves have been defecated on, personal mementos stolen and a cross was kicked over.

So far over 400 people have signed the online petition.

A spokesperson for the council told the newspaper: "We have introduced a number of deterrents at the Rockingham cemetery, such as non-climb paint and increased signage as well as having a number of staff working at the cemetery during the day who remain vigilant to any activity on-site."

The spokesperson added that it would consider any issues raised through any petitions it receives.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800292453-ADNFCR
