Warning signs 'must accompany' public CCTV filming

A security advisory group has reminded anyone that installs CCTV for public surveillance that it must be accompanied by warning signs to tell the public why they are being filmed.

Camerawatch responded after it was revealed that a Staffordshire school had used security cameras to film evidence of pupils smoking.

Landau Forte Academy, in Tamworth, said it was using the footage to fine pupils for breaking school rules, the BBC reports.

But Camerawatch's Paul Makie said the school could not simply implement a CCTV system and then carry on.

"If you're going to collect images from the public and they can be recognised, your CCTV system must be registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, who is the overseeing authority," he told the BBC.

He added that as part of that registration process, people have to "state exactly what you are using that CCTV system for and those reasons must be on the signage that people will see before they are captured by the system."

Part of the Landau Forte Charitable Trust, the academy opened in September last year and offers science and business enterprise as specialist subjects.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800364849-ADNFCR
