A sport's pitch in the village of Elswick is in danger of closure, after the fence surrounding it was declared a health and safety hazard.

The premises have fallen into disrepair after being in use for 17 years, with Elswick Parish Council committing to spending £20,000 to repair it, alongside a £5,000 grant from the Local Strategic Partnership, according to the Blackpool Gazette.

However, a £20,000 grant from Sport England's Inspired Facilities fund is required.

Councillor Paul Hayhurst told the news provider: "The fence is in such bad condition there are wires sticking out and the pitch will have to close if we’re not successful. It is vital to the community it remains open."

Recently, the BBC reported that the Kiplingcotes Derby could fold because of rising health and safety costs.

Race trustee Guy Stephenson told the news provider that £200 had to be spent on warning signs this year, as well as £227 for liability insurance.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801327021-ADNFCR
