A teaching union has called on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to investigate the discovery of asbestos at a secondary school in South Wales.

Cwmcarn High School was closed late on Friday (October 12th) after a report found the substance, with Geraint Davies of NASUWT Cymru telling the BBC that he wants the HSE to ensure that correct procedures are being complied with.

"In view of the seriousness of what has happened at Cwmcarn it's only fair to all concerned, be it teachers and anciliary staff, parents and pupils and indeed the council itself, for such independent advice to be available," Mr Davies noted.

The HSE announced that it was searching to check if there is a basis for a full investigation.

Mr Davies' plea follows action that HSE took against a recycling firm in Croydon.
