Safety sign in Newbury has 'oporational' problems

A safety sign in Newbury has been spotted with an unfortunate spelling mistake.

Locals passing through the town's Bartholomew Street realised the safety sign spells "operation" as "oporation", Newburytoday.co.uk reports.

The illuminated sign was in place to alert motorists and members of the public that work is taking place to replace old iron pipes with new plastic piping.

Duncan MacDonald, a spokesperson for Southern Gas, told the news provider the error was the traffic management company's.

This mistake was spotted far quicker than one in Shropshire recently, however.

Earlier this month, the Shropshire Star reported that a safety sign had been wrong for nearly 20 years, incorrectly spelling the town of Malinslee, in Telford, as "Mallinslee".

A town councillor told the news provider he had been aware of the sign for many years.

"I have been around for ten years but it must have been like that for about 20 years. Each time I see it I think I must report it and get something done but then events take over, things happen and I forget," he said.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800154646-ADNFCR
