Road safety campaigners turn to local businesses for funding

Road safety campaigners have turned to local businesses in order to afford balloons to promote their efforts.

Brighouse Road Safety Committee told the Halifax Courier that it felt let down after Calderdale Council Cabinet would not provide the group with money for its work.

Speaking to the newspaper, Ann Rutherford, the chairwoman of the group, said: "By giving one helium balloon to a child we have an opportunity to give them a pep talk about road safety and if that saves just one life then it is worth the cost."

Ms Rutherford also emphasised that, while times were challenging, the balloons represented an effective way of engaging with children.

Efforts such as those by the Brighouse Road Safety Committee could prove crucial when it comes to educating children, who can easily put themselves in danger when walking across streets with heavy traffic.

The end of the school day represents a dangerous time in particular, as dozens of parents rush to pick up their young ones.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801389159-ADNFCR
