Parents should lead by example in order to educate their children about electrical safety, it has been claimed.

Anneke Rousseau, head of communications for the Electrical Safety Council (ESC), believes that adults can influence the behaviour of their young ones from their early years, increasing their safety knowledge as they grow up.

"Parents do have a role in educating their children in using electricity responsibly – they can play a major role by establishing good behaviour themselves.

"Don't stick a knife into the toaster to get the toast out or that sort of thing, and don't use faulty appliances. Children will [copy] what they see," Ms Rousseau explained.

She added that the ESC operates two websites, with one aimed at children up to five years old and the other directed at teens.

It is vital that kids are aware of the hazards associated with electrical devices, as mistakes can quickly lead to incidents such as house fires.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801421597-ADNFCR
