New health and safety policy making approach revealed

8th March 2012 | Health and Safety Signs

European Union (EU) policies or regulations must be backed by solid evidence, one expert has recommended.

Professor Ragnar Lofstedt, director of the King's Centre for Risk Management at King's College, has announced a new cross-party parliamentary committee, which will aim to promote evidence-based health and safety policy making in the EU.

This group will be introduced at the European Parliament in June.

Professor Lofstedt said: "At the present time, we feel that the European Parliament is not always evidence-based in its policy making. With this committee, we have a welcome opportunity to look at this more closely."

One of the groups backing the committee is the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), which recently commissioned a two-year study on health and safety regulation.

IOSH will operate alongside specialists at the University of Nottingham to decide if reducing laws would enable firms to gain benefits while ensuring their workers are safe.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801312626-ADNFCR
