New 20 minute web tool to help offices spot potential hazards

A new online risk assessment tool, which could include analysis of door signs and office signs in the workplace, has been unveiled by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Taking just 20 minutes to complete, the regulator's web application works by asking employers several questions about their workplace. A bespoke risk assessment is then produced, offering firms guidance on potential office hazards.

The HSE said the tool will help offices cut down on paperwork and red tape.

"Many people assume that risk assessments need to be long, formal documents covering every hazard, no matter how minor or unlikely to occur. That's not the case and the new 20-minute risk assessments make it clear that this can be done for any office quickly and easily," Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSE, said.

The results of the application will then act as evidence when safety officials carry out site inspections.

The online risk assessment tool for offices can be found at www.hse.gov.uk/risk/office.htm.
