Manchester fire chiefs advise kids not to play on ice

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has warned children not to play on the ice currently covering much of the city's paths, which could persuade some firms to install warning signs.

The warning follows an incident with a boy on Chadwick Dam in Stalybridge, where the youngster fell into cold water after the icy surface collapsed 20 metres away from the bank, leaving him with hypothermia.

Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, councillor David Acton, said: "With temperatures increasing following the recent cold snap, ice is thawing and is becoming an increasing danger as it thins out."

Mr Acton emphasised that people do not know how much weight the ice can take, and are only finding out when it is too late.

His comments follow an article in Ripley and Heanor News, which revealed that safety signs have been fitted in Kilburn to warn people of the dangers of snow and ice.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801294341-ADNFCR
