Itchington, or Ichington? Safety sign is unsure

A safety sign in Warwickshire had to be corrected after it featured the embarrassing misspelling of the name of a village.

According to the Coventry Telegraph, sign writers mistakenly wrote up the name of the village Bishop's Itchington as "Bishop's Ichington", missing out the first 't' of the word.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire County Council said the mistake, on the sign on the A425 road, was the fault of eternal contractors, who have been told to rectify the mistake. Thankfully no additional cost to the taxpayer will be passed on.

A photograph of the sign became something of a hit on photo website Flickr. The newspaper reported that one resident had commented: "Now I know Bishop’s Itchington is a funny name, but there’s no need to spell it wrongly."

Perhaps the council needs to call in the Typo Eradication Advancement League. Americans Jeff Deck and Benjamin D Herson are self-styled Typo Vigilantes, currently waging war on the embarrassing misspellings that plague the world of warning signs. They would have set the record straight!
