Ice hotel to install fire alarms

18th November 2013 | Fire Signs

Posted by Jason Nicholls

A hotel in Norway has not had any fire alarms or fire safety signs installed since it opened in 1990, despite the fact that the structure is entirely made of ice.

The structure is made of ice and snow, but according to a hotel spokeswoman there are plenty of “things that can actually catch fire, like pillows, sleeping bags or reindeer skins”.

Obviously, a fire could cause a potentially catastrophic amount of damage should it melt or weaken anything significant to the structure.

The hotel melts every April, and is rebuilt to open every December. Building the alarms into the structure has proven difficult, as the mixture of ice and snow moves around constantly.

The spokeswoman said that installing the alarms has “been a challenge for our building team, but it made us one experience richer”. She added: “The most important concern is the safety of our clients.”ADNFCR-2754-ID-801661669-ADNFCR
