HSE welcomes European safe maintenance campaign

29th June 2010 | Health and Safety Signs

Manufacturing industry employees are the focus of a new European initiative launched in the UK last week.

The European Healthy Workplaces Campaign on Safe Maintenance 2010-11 is designed to remind companies of the measures they should be using to ensure maintenance best practice.

As part of the campaign, a new 'one-stop shop' containing a simple safety checklist for employers has been created on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.

The body is hoping the move will reduce the number of manufacturing industry deaths in UK workplaces, 25 to 30 per cent of which are caused by maintenance failures.

"Maintenance work is often seen simply as a disruption to normal service, but it is fundamental to the integrity of every system and to the health and safety of workers and the public," commented HSE chair Judith Hackitt.

"Workers are often under pressure to complete jobs quickly, but there is no excuse for putting themselves and others in danger by taking short cuts."

Ms Hackitt recently wrote a letter to Lord Young of Graffham, welcoming his review of health and safety laws and practices, and assessment of the UK's compensation culture.
