Heather Bryant has been appointed as the new chief inspector of construction for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Ms Bryant is currently HSE's divisional director for London, the East and South East and will replace Phillip White at the end of March.
Following four years of work, Mr White will move to another key division at the organisation.
"Construction is one of Britain’s most important industries and employs a huge number of people. All of those people have a basic right to return home safe and well from their day’s work.
"To its credit, the sector has already been making good progress in reducing the number of people killed, injured or made unwell by its activities," Ms Bryant stated.
Even though large improvements have been made in recent years, construction is still one of the most dangerous industries in Britain, with 49 people killed and 2,884 seriously injured during 2011/12.
