To mark Gas Safety Week, residents are being encouraged to maintain their appliances.
Purbeck District Council is among the authorities that are supporting the campaign, which is organised by the Gas Safety Register.
The group has urged people to ensure that they use accredited professionals to carry out work on gas appliances, with recent research suggesting that there are a number of false installers in operation.
Over the last year, 690 appliances were tested and 93 per cent of them were deemed unsafe.
Paul Johnston, chief executive of Gas Safe Register, said: "Homeowners should arrange a gas safety check and service each year by a registered engineer."
Mr Johnston added that people renting homes should ensure they have seen a Gas Safety Record from their landlord.
With the winter approaching, now could be the ideal time to check that boilers and other gas appliances are functioning correctly.
