Gas fitter puts family at risk despite warning signs

16th December 2013 | Warning Signs

An unregistered gas fitter has been prosecuted after illegally installing an unsafe boiler, putting a family at risk.

Mahmood Khan reconnected a gas boiler at City Road in Sheffield after gas experts had found it to be “immediately dangerous”, capped it off and attached a warning sign, which Mr Khan completely ignored.

In doing this, he put a family of a mother and two children at serious risk of injury or death. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was alerted to the issue by a National Grid engineer.

Mr Khan pleaded guilty to four offences under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. He was handed a six month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay £600 costs.

HSE inspector Denise Fotheringham said: “Not only was this person incompetent, unqualified and working illegally with gas fittings, he was careless of the risk and the lives of a woman and her two children.”ADNFCR-2754-ID-801672745-ADNFCR
