Businesses are being invited to enter their projects into the IOSH (Institution of Safety and Health) Railway Group Award 2013 for Fatigue Management.

The honour is open to nominations from April to September, with the 2013 award singling out people, teams and companies that have created successful initiatives to approach the problem.

IOSH Railway Group chair Martin Leeks said: "Fatigue can cause injuries and deaths to workers and passengers on our railways. It hampers mental alertness and affects performance, causing errors because of reduced concentration, perception, judgement and even memory."

Mr Leeks continued by saying that fatigue can lead to drowsiness, potentially causing accidents.

Recently, IOSH advised healthcare organisations on how to manage sharps injuries in the workplace.

The laws hope to prevent staff from being exposed to the diseases and infections carried by equipment.

New measures include a requirement for safer needle systems as well as rules to stop injuries for those using needle devices.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801568407-ADNFCR
