Proper health and safety management – such as the use of warning signs and construction site signage – is an enabler that allows firms to run their businesses effectively, the British Safety Council (BSC) has said.

UK health and safety regulation is about to undergo a significant review process, as the government looks to switch legislation to high hazard sites and irresponsible employers, freeing up the vast majority of UK firms from red tape and regulations.

Neal Stone, director of policy and research at the BSC, said that although some organisations feel burdened by health and safety, expert, simple and proportionate advice will get rid of the perception that firms are simply weighted down by health and safety.

"If you manage health and safety properly, and you look after the health and safety of your workforce and ensure that they are properly protected, it is a boost for business," he said.

"It helps the bottom line, it doesn't hinder it and it doesn't make you uncompetitive. It improves workforce motivation, reduces labour turnover and increases productivity."

Under the government plans, inspections will also be cut by at least a third and employers who endanger the safety of the employees and the public will also have to pay for the costs of the investigation into their activities. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800475905-ADNFCR
