Essex firm fined after Hertfordshire roof collapse

An Essex firm has been fined after a worker broke his spine when falling through a skylight opening at a Hampshire construction site.
The employee made a full recovery after the incident at Fontley Road in Titchfield near Foreham on August 16th 2011, though he was not able to work for six weeks.
Prestige Construction Services was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found there were inadequate measures in place to prevent or mitigate the fall.
HSE principal inspector Steve Hull said: “You would expect a construction company to be fully aware of the risks posed by working at height and to take the appropriate safety precautions. Yet that clearly didn't happen here, and the employee could easily have paid with his life as a result.”
Mr Hull explained that the incident would have been entirely preventable if Prestige Construction Services enforced effective measures.
