Could warning signs help reduce silicosis risk?

20th November 2009 | Warning Signs

An event is being held to highlight the risks presented by silicosis, highlighting the importance of providing information such as through warning signs. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is running the session in conjunction with the Working Well Together campaign at Beatsons Building Supplies on Glencryan Road in Cumbernauld. Among the information that will be supplied are examples of correct equipment use and the importance of providing guidance to staff, which could be communicated through warning signs highlighting areas of high risk. Pamela McKenzie, speaking on behalf of the HSE, claims that there are numerous actions that can be taken to reduce the risk to workers. She says: "There are many practical steps employees and employers can take to reduce the risks from inhaling stone dust … Tuesday's event aims to provide workers with the knowledge they need to help them protect their health." The HSE recently ran a session in the north east and highlands areas highlighting the importance of safety when lifting and moving goods, emphasising the value of warning signs advising on correct techniques.
