An Edinburgh construction firm has been handed a healthy and safety accolade, which illuminates the importance of measures such as safety signs.

Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern Limited has been presented with the Sir George Earle trophy at the The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011.

RoSPA commended the firm for its efforts in delivering its "zero harm" goal by 2012, as well as its senior management team's strong and creative approach to health and safety.

Tom Mullarkey, chief executive of RoSPA, said: "Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern has put down a solid benchmark for accident and ill health prevention that we hope other firms will strive to achieve."

The award comes after the Enquirer reported that mountain bikers have been urged not to use the new Olympic course at Hadleigh Farm Country Park due to concerns over safety.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800556304-ADNFCR
