Burnham On Sea pulls out of Britain In Bloom due to health and safety fears

Burnham-On-Sea has pulled out of the 2012 Britain In Bloom competition as a result of health and safety fears surrounding lighting on the town's High Street.

As a result, organisers of Burnham's entry have decided not to enter the regional contest for the first time in numerous years, and columns on the street will be upgraded as part of a regeneration project, reports Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Speaking to the website, Richard Young, secretary of Burnham In Bloom, said: "Rather than spend £1,000 now on buying new safety brackets that may not fit onto the new columns, we've decided to take a year off and wait for the new lamp posts to be installed."

Elsewhere, the BBC has reported that the Kiplingcotes Derby could be at risk of folding due to the rising cost of health and safety measures.

Race trustee Guy Stephenson told the news provider that £200 was spent on warning signs for the event, but other expenses may mean that it has to be cancelled.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801343779-ADNFCR
