Businesses are being urged to make sure they have proper health and safety procedures in place, including safety signage, to make sure employees work safely and carefully.

Aviva is launching its Simply Safety campaign, as research from the company shows that one-fifth of all injuries in the manufacturing sector last year were as a result of a trip or slip.

Phil Grace, liability risk manager at Aviva, pointed out that these incidents are caused by stray pallets, uneven floors or spilt liquids.

Safety signs can alert workers to these obstacles and help to avoid accidents in the workplace.

"Last year, 25 workers were killed and more than 4,000 seriously injured in the manufacturing sector in the UK, with a slip or trip the cause of 21 per cent of these incidents.

"A slip or trip may seem like a minor incident, but there is the potential for serious injury," Mr Grace said.

He added that the safety of employees should be "paramount" to businesses.

Earlier this week the Construction Enquirer reported that provisional figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) showed an increase in the number of construction fatalities recorded in 2009/10. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800507139-ADNFCR
